Giant Tiger Donates $15,000 to the Ottawa Network for Education's School Breakfast Program

Giant Tiger VP of Marketing Karen Sterling, Councillor Jean Cloutier and local celebrity chef help celebrate donation by preparing breakfast for program participants

OTTAWA, ONTARIO - (Feb. 11, 2016) - As part of its Charitable Giving Foundation, Giant Tiger, the all-Canadian family discount store, has donated $15,000 to the Ottawa Network for Education's (ONFE) Ottawa School Breakfast Program.

ONFE's School Breakfast Program serves 13,500 students in 175 schools across the city and helps to ensure that children in need have access to a healthy breakfast in a safe, supervised environment.

"At Giant Tiger we understand the important role breakfast plays in the development of children," said Thomas Haig, President and COO, Giant Tiger Stores Limited. "The Ottawa Network for Education's School Breakfast Program helps make nutrition a priority for students in our local community and we are delighted to help them serve as many schools as possible."

In addition to its donation, on Thursday, February 11, Giant Tiger volunteers, including Vice President of Marketing Karen Sterling, Councillor Jean Cloutier and local celebrity Chef Michael Radford of The Whalesbone and The Elmdale Tavern and Oyster House, will prepare and serve a customized breakfast to program participants at Vincent Massey Public School. Breakfast will be served at 8:00 a.m. and will feature Giant Tiger's private grocery label Giant Value.

"We know that breakfast programs make a difference," said Carolyn Hunter, Director of the Ottawa School Breakfast Program. "Research shows that children who eat a nutritious breakfast are more engaged in daily learning, perform better in school and have better self-esteem and health. We are so grateful to Giant Tiger for their ongoing support of the program and the impact their involvement has had in our community."
